thankful heart bible versesa thankful heart prepares the way

What is God’s most sought after response from us? Prayer? Service? Holiness? In all the years of helping people find the answer to the question “What is God’s will for my life?” or “What does God want me to do?”, I can quickly say. Be thankful.

If we could all learn this very basic, but powerful activity, it would have a huge impact on the entire aspect of Christian growth and discipleship. God can not give you a thankful heart. It is a mindful and willful act of your choosing to be thankful. In fact, the hinge pin that holds every other aspect of the Christian life together is thankfulness. A lot of negative things go away in our life when we are thankful. Pride, anger, selfishness, all are whittled away from our demeanor when we are thankful. Just a short reading of the bible verses below will tell us that having a ‘thankful heart’ is the key ingredient to understanding what it means to offer to God the ‘sacrifice of praise’. It took me years to understand that to bring the sacrifice of praise to God did NOT mean having a meaningful worship experience either publicly or privately. It meant that I literally spoke my thankfulness to God, no matter what my circumstances.

I think God smiles when He sees that the overall attitude coming from me as being thankful. It is an act of my stubborn, grumpy, self absorbed, selfish will to be thankful. So when I am in the middle of something that is pushing on me and making me uncomfortable, to choose to find something to be thankful for and then to verbally speak that ‘thankfulness’ to God … ushers His power, His grace, His presence into that situation.

My good friend, pastor, and boss Dr. Tommy Brumett mentors this to me on a daily basis. In fact, a phrase that he uses so much, it has become part of my vocabulary. “Thanks be”. I hear him say those two little words at least 10-20 times a day 7 days a week. He says it when he prays, he says it when he preaches, he says it in staff meeting, heck, he will say it in just normal conversation. What a quick example of what the sacrifice of praise is all about. “the fruit of our lips that give thanks to His name.”

Thanks be!
