the power of wordsPower of Words

The bible has a lot to say about the power of words. They can build up and they can tear down. What determines the words that we use is usually the condition of our heart. If I have quoted this for as long as I can remember, “Hurt People, Hurt People”, meaning if my feelings are emotions are damaged it will effect the way I act or speak to others. Words have the power to condemn and the power to forgive. I believe that is the reason that there are so many bible verses that relate to the power of words.

Luke 6:45
New International Version (NIV)
A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

the heart determines the power of words

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Ecclesiastes 5:2

Don’t say anything that would hurt another person. Instead, speak only what is good so that you can give help wherever it is needed. That way, what you say will help those who hear you.

Matthew 12:37
New International Version (NIV)
For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Psalm 19:14

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Isaiah 50:4
New International Version (NIV)
The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.

Understanding the power of words can bring peace, comfort and joy to people around us.
