bible verse of the day

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music;  Psalm 98:4

More about Today’s Verse about Joy

‘Tis the season! Hopefully not for just programs, presents, and parties, but for some quiet reflection and worship. Christmas is upon us and with it comes a section of songs we call “Christmas Carols”. One of the most beloved of those songs is Joy to the World. The Scripture-based words of Joy To the World were written by renowned Methodist Minister Isaac Watts in 1719. The original music score is attributed entirely to Handel. The music familiar to this current generation was adapted from various songs and composers (including Handel) into an arrangement by Lowell Mason.

The intent of the song by Watts was not supposed to be ‘just’ for Christmas. Joy to the World is the “imitation” of the last half of Psalm 98. The author transformed the old Jewish psalm of praise for some historic deliverance into a Christian song of rejoicing for the salvation of God that began to be manifested when the Babe of Bethlehem came “to make his blessing flow far as the curse is found.” This is one of the most joyous hymns in all Christendom because it makes so real what Christ’s birth means to all mankind.

The tune to which the hymn is sung is attributed to George Frederick Handel and bears resemblance to phrases of his great oratorio, Messiah. Notably the first four tones match the beginning of the chorus, “Lift Up Your Heads.”

Joy To The World

Joy to the world! the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.

Joy to the world! the Saviour reigns;
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.
