PerseverancePerseverance – Press On

The dictionary defines perseverance as a steady persistence in adhering to a course of action, a belief, or a purpose; steadfastness. As Christians, living a holy or separated life indeed takes perseverance. My favorite of all verses on perseverance is found in Pilippians 3:13-15 which does not include the word perseverance but instead uses the verb “press on”. To me that is much more of a graphic depiction of what true perseverance is all about. In other words, whatever happens, (or in the words of the early cowboys in America, “in spite of hell or high water”), we are pushing toward the goal. As Christians we will face trials and trouble that will test our faith, those that persevere through the obstacles that life will bring us will make it to our goal.

Struggle produces Perseverance

Philippians 3:13-15
New International Version (NIV)
Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Romans 5:3-5
New International Version (NIV)
Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

James 1:2-4
New International Version (NIV)
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

2 Thessalonians 1:4
New International Version (NIV)
Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.

Hebrews 12:1
New International Version (NIV)
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,

James 1:3
Common English Bible (CEB)
After all, you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

2 Peter 1:5-7
New International Version (NIV)
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.
